This

support organisation in our area will be listed on this unique
resource and be seen by both local GPs and the general
public

We
are now offering entry by donation rather than a fixed
fee, for all categories, provided you are able to meet the
quality control minimum criteria for entry in our on-line
questionnaire.
Donations
will no longer be required if we are successful in obtaining
funding for the maintenance of the Directory through local
PCTs. We will keep you informed of our progress
- Questionnaire now more
user-friendly!
We
are also making changes to the layout of the questionnaire,
making the application process simpler to follow. GO to

- Topic Meetings" between GPs and
practitioners
We
are holding a series of integrated
medicine meetings
where complementary and alternative practitioners,
psychological & spiritual support professionals and
self-help teachers can meet GPs to discuss the different
approaches available for specific conditions where there is
evidence that alternative approaches work
well.
The first meeting was held at Corbett
House
Surgery
at the Wellspring
Healthy
Living Centre on Wednesday the
14th Sept at
7pm . The topic was
DEPRESSION.
The
meeting was a great success with 30 practioners and doctors
attending. We will post a full report of the meeting on this
newspage in due course.
A
second meeting will take place at Montpelier
Health Centre on Wednesday 19th October at
12.30pm
and the topic will be BACK
PAIN.
A GP will open proceedings with a 5-minute talk on
the orthodox approach, followed by a summary of the CAM
evidence base, plus
contributions from those offering other approaches,
followed by discussion.
We hope that the shared information will contribute to
towards the uptake by local PCTs of effective CAM therapies
for specific medical conditions.
Speakers will
include:

Mitchell GP

US medical schools
including CAM therapies in curricula
Acupuncture,
herbal remedies and other forms of alternative medicine are
finding their way into curriculums at traditional American
medical schools - most recently the University of
Pennsylvania.
More than
a third of American adults have tried alternative therapies -
including yoga, meditation, herbs and the Atkins diet -
according to a 2002 government survey of 31,000 people, the
largest study of its kind in the US.
Universities
nationwide, in response to the burgeoning numbers, are
increasingly focusing on complementary medicine (defined as
used alongside conventional treatment) and alternative
medicine (used instead of conventional treatment). Some are
creating their own programs and others are working with
alternative medicine practitioners, said Aviad Haramati, a
professor at Georgetown University's medical school.
More than 95 of
America's 125 medical schools require some kind of
complementary and alternative medicine coursework, according
to the Association of American Medical
Colleges.
